Information Technology (IT)

Information technology is the technology that uses computing with high-speed communication links to spread information from one place to another. The interconnection of computers enables people to send and receive information. The communication links are also used to communicate with different people in the world.

The world has become a global village due to information technology. It means that people living in the world know one another as if they are living in a village. It has become possible due to fast communication links. Information can be transferred from one place to another place easily and quickly.

Information plays an important role in every field of life information can be used to improve the standard of life. It can also be use for solving different problems. For example, If a person has the latest information about the medical field, he can se this information to cure different diseases.

Information technology ha enabled different types of institutions and organizations to be a part of digital convergence. The digital convergence means that various industries have merged electronically to exchange information. This merging is very important in the modern world. The information can be transferred in various forms such as text, photos, audio and video etc.

Component of Information Technology

Three components of information technology are as follows

a. Computers:

Electronic systems that can be instructed to accept, process, store and present data and information.

b. Communication Network:

It is an interconnection of different locations through a medium that allows people to send and receive information. Communication network allows people and business to interact.

It includes hardware, programs and information. Information technology has become revolutionary through the use of communication networks. Information can be transferred from one place to another easily and quickly.

c. Know-how:

Know-how is the capability to do something properly. Information technology know-how includes the familiarity with the tools of information technology including the Internet as well as the skills needed  to use these tools. It also includes the understanding of using IT for problem-solving and creating opportunities.

People should know the user of information technology to solve problems. They should also know how information technology can create opportunities for them.

IT Professionals

A person who has adopted the field of information technology as a profession is called IT professional. IT professionals are responsible for acquiring, developing, maintaining or operating hardware and software associated with computers and communication networks.

Types of IT Professional

A person who has adopted the field of information technology as a profession is called IT professional. Different types of IT professionals are as follows:

1. Computer Programmer:

Computer programmer is a person who writes computer programs. The programs are written to solve different problems. He also modifies an existing program to meet the new requirements or remove errors. A programmer has very good knowledge of programming languages.

2. Database Administrator:

Database administrator is a person who designs, develops, implement and maintains the database. He analyzes and determines the most effective way to collect and store data. He is also responsible for the security, backup and restorting of databases.

He provides access to authorized users and monitors the performance of the databases.

3. System Analyst:

System analyst is a person who analyzes the data processing requirements for an organization and develops the information system for it. He investigates problems and plans the solution. He also recommends the software and hardware required for the solution.

He coordinates with the programmer and database administrator to develop the information system. This career requires an ability to identify problems and find technical solutions.

4. Hardware Engineer:

Hardware engineer is a person who designs, develops and implements the computer hardware. He also tests, maintains and repairs hardware components of a system. The components include processors, circuit boards, memory and networking devices etc.

5. Network Administrator:

Network administrator is a person who plans, installs and maintains computer networks. He also provides network accounts and access rights to the users. He troubleshoot the problems in the network. He may be responsible for maintaining the security of a network.

6. Website Designer:

Web designer is a person who creates, posts and modifies  the contents for the Web. He designs the web pages that include text, images, sound and videos. He makes sure that the website design is attractive and user friendly.

It needs good sense of design and understanding of graphical user interface. Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) is the most commonly used language to create web pages.

7. Multimedia Designer:

Multimedia Designer is a person who creates the designs using different types of media. Multimedia includes text, images, audio, video and animation. An animation is created by arranging a sequence of images using computer software.

He presents the information in an easy and attractive way. He can also edit and manipulate audio and video files. Multimedia designers usually work in film/TV industry, software houses and advertising companies. The use of multimedia has become very popular.

8. Security Specialist:

A security specialist analyzes computer system’s vulnerability to threats from viruses, worms, unauthorized access and physical damage. Security specialist installs and configures firewalls and antivirus software. He also works with management and employees to develop polices and procedures to protect computer equipment and data.

9. Technical Support Specialist:

A technical support specialist troubleshoots hardware and software problems. Good interpersonal skills and patience are required for this job.

10. Technical Writer:

A technical writer creates documentation for large programming projects and writes the online or printed user manuals for computers, peripheral devices and software. Some technical writes work for computer magazines to write columns about the latest hardware products, software and business solutions.

11. Quality Assurance Specialist:

A quality assurance specialist participates in alpha and beta test cycles of software to find bugs and usability problems. It requires good eye for detail and passion for perfection.

12. Computer Operator:

A computer operator works with system software for network servers, mainframes, and supercomputers. Computer operator monitors computer performance, installs software patches and upgrades, performs backups and restores data as necessary.
