Facebook filed for an IPO on January 1, 2012. The company’s initial announcement stated that it intended to raise $5 billion from its 845 million annual users and a website that receives 2.7 billion likes and traffic each day. After the IPO, Zuckerberg will have a 22% stake in Facebook and 57% of voting shares. Underwriters bought the shares for $38 apiece, valuing the company at $104 billion, the highest price to date for a newly public company.
On May 16, the day before the IPO, Facebook announced that it would sell 25% more shares than originally planned due to high demand. The IPO raised $16 billion, making it the third largest in US history (only ahead of AT&T Wireless and behind only General Motors and Visa). The share price has left the company with a greater market capitalization than almost all US companies – heavyweights such as Amazon, McDonald’s, Disney and Kraft Foods – and made Zuckerberg’s net worth $19 billion.
The New York Times said the offer overcame doubts about Facebook’s struggle to convince advertisers to make the company a “must-have”. Jimmy Lee described JPMorgan Chase as “the next big blue chip.” On the other hand, TechCrunch writers expressed skepticism, saying, “This is a lot to live up to, and Facebook will have to add new recipes to justify the big comparison.”
